Ann Meese is an incredible two-dimensional artist with fantastic paintings whose rich colors capture breathtaking nature scenes. Her apt use of color imbues her creations with life; you can almost feel the warmth of the sun and smell the fragrance of the blooms. “I work primarily in acrylic or oil and find my inspiration in nature. I work in my studio and in plein aire and enjoy painting landscape and still life subjects. It is one my greatest joys to be able to pursue my love of art through my paintings, and I feel privileged to share my work with others at FRESH. It is always my hope that others find some measure of joy in experiencing my work,” Meese says. Elaine Willig is a jewelry artist with an instinctual talent for arranging gems, stones, beads and found objects to create stunning jewelry art. Her pieces are one-of-a-kind and range from whimsical to traditional. She is also our resident repair master and loves to take custom orders for your special events. Take some time to sit with her; you will be amazed at her ability to design exactly what you are looking for!
Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101, presents AGA!NST THE GRA!N, by graffiti artist DejaVu, and Remnants, by Artist Kala Rackley. DejaVu is not just a person … but an idea. That idea was born in Hirschau, Germany, in the summer of 1991. Becoming official in the “graffiti scene” in 2006, DejaVu didn’t want to debut just anywhere. Now living in Springfield, he wants to celebrate the heart of downtown … “It’s just so full of life … Especially at night, when I come out of hiding”. He has a European style mingled with the abstracted “less is more” style. DejaVu uses Montana spray paint, Sharpies, Prismacolor markers, acid free paper and of course… walls. Since it would have been rather difficult to bring any walls to this showcase, all of the pieces in this show were done especially for this show … fresh, just for Good Girl Art, May 2013 only. Of her show, Kala Rackley says, “I work with a very personal subject matter, and the most appropriate vehicle for me to convey my experiences is through the self-portrait. Perpetuated in children’s formative years, widely-accepted conventions and gender stereotypes create unrealistic expectations and maintain harmful myths. In my work, I portray the aftermath of childhood abuse through metaphor: grown women conflicted with identity struggle with little-girl clothes, dolls and adult situations. My depictions of vintage Halloween masks of princesses and superheroes, too, narrate these pervasive gender stereotypes.” (417) 865-7055 www.goodgirlartgallery.com Open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. T-Sat

Phelps, presents Springtime on the Picture-Plane: The Art of Jane Parker plus the 7th Annual Silent Birdhouse Auction. “Jane Parker’s paintings and drawings richly avoid the sin of description while evoking a plethora of riches. They lead to a specificity of place and object only possible in the ambiance of the imagination – a place somewhere between music and a walk in the woods. Her work is to be entered rather than seen – experiences rather than admired. She consistently eschews artifice in favor of a reality that is less provable than palpable.” – Malki Sadeq, 2013 The Silent Birdhouse Auction, hosted by Drury University to benefit the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, features skillfully adorned birdhouses created by local artists and friends of the community. The event begins with the May 3 Art Walk and bidding continues throughout the month. (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.com

Four of his Doren’s Presidents (Washington, Nixon, Roosevelt and Taft) were selected for the show. “I’m happiest with Nixon because I feel like his expression captures how most people imagine him,” Doren says.

Revel Advertising at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Featured Artist Kat Allie. “I want people to view my artwork as very sensory and engaging. Working with hot beeswax, damar resin and oil pigment allows me immediate access to the natural or organic state of creating. The encaustic medium transforms from a liquid to a solid within seconds. Acting and reacting becomes intuitive and transcendental. I’m inherently drawn to nature for my subject. Nature transforms and abstracts as I sense and experience it through the human condition. My ultimate hope is for the viewer to connect, if even for a split second, with the splendid colors and textures that compose life.” — Kat Allie (417) 368-6966 www.reveladvertising.com

My experience is that of being part of an extended family that has endured a history of cancer and high mortality rate. As I have become more aware of my family’s history with illness through the examination of my memories, I have also become wary of the future and empathetic of the past.” – Jamie Bates (417) 873-7263 www.drury.edu/pacgallery Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. M, T, W, F; 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Good Girl Art Gallery, 325 E. Walnut St., Ste. 101, presents Girl In Trouble Is A Temporary Thing: Dog Park to Ruins by Melissa Marrs. Commenting on the themes of her show, Marrs says: Springfield’s Cruse Dog Park is an idyllic park. A place where humans and dogs play well together the majority of the time. … When visiting the Dog Park it is common to be with 10 or more dogs at a time. Therefore I was struck by a news article from January 7, 2013, about a park outside Mexico City, Cerro De La Estrella. There a pack of 10 abandoned dogs killed a 26-year-old woman, a one-year-old child and possibly other humans. After my exploration of the idyllic experience in my back yard, I wanted to explore this savage event on the same continent. I painted an image of what can happen when dogs are abandoned, abused, neglected, hungry and released in a wooded park area to fend for themselves. What is a Ruin? Is it ancient, Roman, an abandoned dog, a bombed-out building, a skull, a life ending? … I traveled in November to a city in The Levant which is recovering from civil war and other regional wars ever looming to spill over. I witnessed modern day ruins as a wakeup call of what a ruin can invoke. I have attempted to paint what I saw. (417) 865-7055 www.goodgirlartgallery.com Open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. T-Sat

Obelisk Home at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Misunderstood: The Art of Mary Hamilton “The use of feminine beauty and sex as a vehicle of power over the powerful is hardly a new idea. Artists since prehistory have glorified and also vilified the female image to show their indiscretions and bad intentions. I seek to explore these historic, allegoric images of women in their finest evil moments in ways that could further explore their true intentions. I want my own compositions and elements to explore the social complexities and survival instincts of all women and their temptations. These women will not hide their evil deeds with clothing and jewels as everyone already knows what evil lies beneath, but I contend they are all just misunderstood.” —Mary Hamilton (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.comm

OTC Fine Art Gallery at The Gillioz, 325 Park Central East, Third Floor, proudly hosts the Central Ozarks Conference Annual Juried High School Art Exhibition! For the last four years OTC Gallery has proudly hosted this annual juried exhibition promoting some of our local and regional high schools’ young and up and coming new artists. This year, the event will actually be featured during April Art Walk with the awards ceremony taking place during the evening of our Art Walk reception. Not only does OTC Fine Arts have the COC young artists to feature, but will also enthusiastically take “center stage” as we promote our own student talent in the visual, performing, and musical arts on the downtown Park Central Square, 6:30-9:30p.m. during the April Art Walk. OTC Fine Arts will be promoting our upcoming spring musical performance of Clue: The Musical by engaging Art Walk-goers in a live interactive game of murder mystery intrigue on the square during Art Walk. Join us in the fun and see if you can solve who did it, with what weapon, and in what local establishment? Was it Colonel Mustard in the Park Central Branch Library with the Rope, or did you spot Miss Scarlet on the Square with a Candlestick? Perhaps it was Ms. Peacock in the MudLounge with the Lead Pipe while she was sipping on a hot beverage. It will be an evening of great fun! Lastly, OTC Fine Art Portfolio Development students proudly present their own feature exhibition just off the square at Miguel’s Wrap and Roll. Their art exhibition i dent i ty is one to not be missed as seven individuals come together to unabashedly delve into their own psyches while finding out just how different they are but yet what the common bonds are that tie us all together as human beings. Please see the excellent flyers around town promoting i dent i ty. (417) 447-8873 Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. M-Th; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. F; and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on First Fridays

Walnut St., Ste. 101, presents Στρατογραφια (Stratografia) by Todd Lowery, and Life on the Hot Lunch Line by Lynley Farris in March. Lowery’s show “examines in sections the repeated chromatic layers that compose a painting, at and below the surface. Skeletal land, corporeal sea and the breath of sky. Sunlight, water, air. Echo. Concrete, stone, and epoch. Remnants, ruins, Khora. White paper, color wash strata, imperfect geometries.” Works include: Acrylic on paper 2011-13, multimedia sculpture 2013, Meditations on Greece. Regarding her show, Farris says, “Three years ago I had a realization that I had two major purposes in life. … 1. I need to make art; 2. I need to feed people. If I made these two activities the priority in my life, it was all the happiness I needed. On my return back to Springfield, my job quest led me to the roll of a lunch lady. … What I discovered about the daily happenings of a lunch lady is what I put into my artwork, the whimsical, the sad, the frustrations, the fussy old women, and the sometimes bratty little kids, the things that keep me putting my apron on each day in hopes that by the end of my shift I’ll have one more inspiration for my art.” (417) 865-7055 www.goodgirlartgallery.com Open 11 a.m.-7 p.m. T-Sat

Obelisk Home at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Taking Flight, The Art of Stephanie Cramer “Center stage in my art is the figure — an object in motion, as if the figure is caught, just for an instant; a glimpse, a snapshot before the gesture is complete. I’m not in search of exact representation. I’m intent rather on provoking a sense of tension or intensity. These plus color, bring the emotion to the painting. Whether spatial or expressionistic, the implied relationship between figures is intended to arouse curiosity. Painting is like a freeze frame. It helps both the viewer and the painter to pause—if just for a second as we enter into that two dimensional space. Most of the time the stage is imaginary or based on dreams and memories.” — Stephanie Cramer (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.com

OTC Fine Art Gallery at The Gillioz, 325 Park Central East, Third Floor, proudly presents Photographer Gretchen Miekley’s show: “I am more than…” “Have you ever thought about the labels that are put on people? Some people are labeled because of their skin color or because they have a learning disability or a health condition or a physical deformity or even a different way of believing. … At the end of the day our labels don’t matter. I have accepted the challenge to tackle labels by telling the stories behind the labels. I am fully embracing this fight through photographing some of the strongest individuals you’ll ever meet. All of the subjects of these photographs could easily be labeled. But their labels are our life lessons. … As you look at these photographs, I pray you’ll learn to stand up for a child or friend that may have problems both seen and unseen. I hope you’ll not pass judgment. I pray you’ll not stare if someone looks different from you. I hope you’ll become a voice of good that others need to hear.” The artist invites all to experience her show OTC Fine Art Gallery, 3rd Floor of The Gillioz Theatre … “to celebrate my heroes. They’ve chosen to share their stories so others will see well beyond the labels. Peace, Love, Photos!” – Gretch (417) 447-8873 Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. M-Th; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. F; and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on First Fridays

His surfaces are varied both in material and application. I was raised in the mountains and plains of Colorado on small hobby farms, but moved to Missouri in 2005. I have always loved art and animals. I am inadvertently influenced by my life-styles. I like to paint things that I know and consequently focus on insignificant aspects of nature like frog’s eyes or turtle races. I strive to put the viewer in the subject’s world, like a playful version of Bernini from the 17th Century. As a child I used to pretend that I was an animal and always wondered what it was like to be one of them. Now all I have to do is visualize it and paint it, and everyone can go there with me! It’s all in the Perspective!” – Lena Lena will be offering, small, affordable portraits at the Farmer’s Gastropub on March 1st Art Walk. Please bring your date, a hearty appetite and a smile! To see Lena’s work, please visit www.lqperspective.com Farmers Gastropub is a great place to start or end your First Friday Art Walk with a burger and a pint!
Most of the time the stage is imaginary or based on dreams and memories.” — Stephanie Cramer (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.comm

I hope you’ll become a voice of good that others need to hear. I invite you to come experience First Friday Art Walk at the OTC Fine Art Gallery, 3rd Floor of The Gillioz Theatre, on March 1 to celebrate my heroes. They’ve chosen to share their stories so others will see well beyond the labels. Peace, Love, Photos!” – Gretch Also, don’t miss the First Friday Live show in the Gillioz lobby and theater. College St., is excited to host an opening art reception for Lane Simmons, Professor of Photography at Evangel University. The reception is free and open to the public, Friday March 1 as part of the First Friday Art Walk. Two of Simmons favorite subjects to photograph are landscapes and old, dilapidated buildings. “God’s love for people and His infinite creativity are reflected through this wonderful playground we call earth,” says Simmons. Simmons feels dilapidated buildings represent the hopes, dreams and memories of the people who inhabited them. He is drawn to these subjects because they are layered with shapes and textures. He predominately works in black and white – it dissects the subject into its basic shape and texture. “I’ve discovered the magic of High Dynamic Range Digital Photography. HDR Photography renders the subject with extreme detail not achievable in normal photography.” Simmons’ current work reflects his love of photojournalism and landscape. As part of the First Friday Art Walk, Creativore will give the public a sneak preview of their new location and creativity. Creativore is an agency where marketing is their passion and specialty.
Revel Advertising at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Featured Artist Kat Allie in March.

Drury Pool Art Center Gallery, 940 N. Clay St., presents The Back of Beyond: Works by Vanessa Woods through Jan. 28, 2013. A solo exhibition, including photographs and films by San Francisco artist Woods, The Back of Beyond explores fictive universes that push the boundaries of the narrative form. As a photographer and 16mm filmmaker, Woods is interested in the relationship between static and dynamic images, and how both can generate spaces in which new systems can be imagined. Many of her films use her black-and-white photographs as source material, wherein the photographic document is relied on partly as an object of truth, and partly as an infinitely malleable image-base. The flux between the still and moving image allows narratives to continually develop and provides a means for examining conceptual relationships between photography, time, symbols and memory. Drawing from surrealism, Woods’ work transforms “real space” through extensive manipulation and layering that includes re-photography, collage, sewing and multiple exposures in-camera. These processes catalyze unexpected chances that allow her to further investigate facets of symbolism, memory and dream.
Obelisk Home at the Inspired Commerce Building, 214 W. Phelps, presents Great Lake: The Art of Karen Schneider in November. “Growing up along the banks of Lake Erie in Ashtabula, Ohio, my wild place was always the beach. The big oak tree, the lift bridge, the view of the harbor, the railroad yards, quiet tide pools, the scent of rain before a storm, sitting on the pier watching the moonrise, sailing: These are the blood-memory landmarks of my childhood. The lake expresses many moods in its many seasons. The abstract frozen ice caps of winter’s crust melt into spring storms, then summer’s warm sun, followed by November’s howling menace. How to pain one gray sky as it is? I no longer live beside the lake, but every trip back, I always reserve a few quiet hours to go walk the beach alone. My paintings in one way or another speak to my circle of quiet. I hope you find something in them that speaks to yours.” – Karen Schneider (417) 616-6488 www.obeliskhome.com

OTC Fine Art Gallery at The Gillioz, 325 Park Central East, Third Floor, presents Nancy Rose: In and Out of Reality in November. “Simply, there are no words for some things. That is why I paint. I have a deep love for being: for taking the moment and making the most of it. My art is an expression of the emotions I feel in those moments, my state of being. It is like I am a collector of people and experiences. I love to share them through varied genre. Abstracts develop stroke by stroke just as a page in a journal becomes written. I create landscapes to express my wonder at the beauty and healing I find in nature. Portraits and figure painting depict my love for the people that come into my life. And animals, well, I can’t resist those eyes!” – Nancy Rose (417) 447-8873 Open 9 a.m.-6 p.m. M-Th; 9 a.m.-3 p.m. F; and 9 a.m.-10 p.m. on First Fridays

Jane Parker’s recent paintings and drawings, while not explicit in their meaning, refer in a general way to the lives and structures of North American indigenous people. Her graphic denial of pictorial space foreshadows a painterly encounter with life-ways subsequently targeted by relentless cultural vandalism over several centuries. Parker’s imagery, most often implied, evokes and celebrates a gone era without specific depiction or narrative reference. Encampment is more homage than polemic and more idea than place.” (417) 873-7263 www.drury.edu/pacgallery Open 8 a.m.-5 p.m. M, T, W, F; 8 a.m.-8 p.m.

Fresh Gallery, 400 W. Walnut, presents Featured Artists Marylou Legsdin and Angel Brame in October. Marylou Legsdin, a pastel and paint artist, focuses on favorite subjects including the creeks, rivers, hill and woodlands of the Ozarks. Her landscapes capture everything from the brilliant, reflective light of a sunny day to the somber shadows of evening’s heavy sky. Sky paintings dominate Marylou’s October show, a fascination that was influenced by her Cherokee grandfather, who could forecast the weather by the sky, its clouds and color. Working primarily in pastels and watercolors, Marylou also utilizes acrylics and colored pencil. Angel Brame is a ceramicist, but she got her start in art through painting. Working in porcelain with electric and gas-reduction firings, Angel produces functional pieces such as coffee mugs and dinnerware sets, as well as fine art “paintings” in clay that utilize slip texture, stamps and glaze combinations. Tactility is essential, and her goal is that the viewer be drawn to touch and examine her work from every angle, experiencing the textures and colors up close. www.freshgallery.org (417) 862-9300 Open 11 a.m.-6 p.m. T-Sat
